Honorable Mention
a bad week
Frank Faust

the town was old when I was young
had been through many iterations
from small pastoral
to boom gold and bushranger
from public service institution base
to centre for visitors
who chose to spend their passing time
peering over relics
of the almost forgotten

home was perched right on the beaten track
around the corner from an edifice
above the vantage for a view
and strangers came daily
drawn to catch a glimpse
to try to bridge the distance in their minds
between then and now

on foot
in car
by bus
day-trippers all
for that was before the township awoke
before the profits of encouragement
by bed and by breakfast
were well understood
before the potential return
from organisation of diversions
had been calculated

we youthful anti-heroes
resentful ingrates that we were
thought them invaders of private ground
to be made uncomfortable if possible

often I have thought of visiting bali
was envious of friends that went
but opportunity seemed never to arise
I don't feel the same way now
and probably
I will not visit

once my destiny seemed university
to be a teacher
some subject related to words
and to writing them beautiful
it will not happen now
yesterday a classroom was painted handgun red
the second time in a year or so
these are no conditions
for a love of words
and I am grown so very much older

my chosen path turned out to be in mental health
where so many people
do what they can
using themselves to make a change
to help straighten out distorted thinking

last week a woman I knew
was slain outside an elevator door
a few steps back from lunch
nobody knows for sure
why she was the chosen one
but they put her below ground just yesterday
and I don't enjoy my work
the way I used to do

when I was young and the town was old
we didn't like our visitors very much
we thought them rubber necks
poking over things rightfully ours
collectively we named them terrorists
and wished them away to bad ends

this has been a bad week
I meant no malice
